He made his anime debut in 1963 as the narrator in Tetsujin 28-go (first TV anime adaptation).
His voice type was baritone, and he was known as a skilled character actor who often played elderly and middle-aged male roles. As one of the great figures in the anime industry, he had been active since the 1960s, during the early days of Japanese animation.
In foreign film dubbing, he was the official Japanese voice actor for James Earl Jones. He was also well-known for his role as Admiral Ackbar in the Star Wars series.
In 2016, he stepped down from his regular program due to health issues and had been in treatment for some time. On June 10, 2019, he passed away from heart failure at a hospital in Minato, Tokyo, at the age of 83.
