He has been active since the dawn of television in 1960 and is considered one of the doyens in the Japanese voice acting industry. His natural voice is deep and gravelly. Depending on the character, he could play the fool, the dimwit, the cheerful elderly, the formidable arch-enemy, the fat man, the thin man, and anything from serious to comical roles, and he was known for his unique delivery due to his frequent improvisation.
From 1977 to 1979, his line "Pochittona!" as Boyacky in "Yatterman," and from 1986 to 2015, his narration in the "Dragon Ball" series were incredibly famous, making him a voice that the nation has heard through significant characters in era-defining shows. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that there was no one in the country who hadn't heard Hachinai's voice.
He went on hiatus for medical treatment in 2015. He stepped down after episode 12 of the anime "Dragon Ball Super," and until his hiatus, he continued to work in the "Dragon Ball" series exclusively in the voice acting field.
