Summary
Born to a carpenter father, he lived near Kushida Shrine in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture. The real name is Yamaguchi Mitsuo.
As a child, he liked carpentry and animals, which led him to consider working in animal-related fields or becoming an assistant director involved in filmmaking. He also liked manga and anime, and while he was interested in voice acting, he didn't consciously consider it as a clear career path. In high school, he first expressed to his mother his desire to become an actor. Facing no opposition from his parents, he moved to Tokyo at the age of 19 in 1984 and enrolled in the Tokyo Announce Gakuin, a specialized school. There, he found out that Nozawa Naoko, whom he liked even before he was conscious of voice acting as a profession, was an instructor. Seeing an advertisement of the school where later his mentor, Kimotsuka Kaneta, was also teaching, he thought, "I have to attend this training school," and he was assigned to Kimotsuka’s class.
He joined the theatrical group 21st Century FOX and devoted himself entirely to it, leaving the announce school voluntarily after six months. Sound director Shiba Shigeharu, who saw him performing a minor role on stage, approached him, asking if he would like to become a voice actor. Starting at the age of 23, he also began working as a voice actor, and since then, he has appeared in many works. He received an individual voice actor award at the Tokyo International Anime Fair 2003 and the Tomiyama Kei Award at the 13th Voice Actor Awards in 2019.
His portrayal of young boy characters is versatile, ranging from delicate and noble roles like Arslan in "The Heroic Legend of Arslan," naughty boys like Sai Saici in "Mobile Fighter G Gundam," to wild characters like Gulliver in "Gulliver Boy." His voice is so prevalent that almost every child in Japan has heard it, making someone who hasn’t heard his voice practically a non-citizen.
