Summary

Hisaishi Joe is a Japanese composer, arranger, conductor, and pianist.

He graduated from the Composition Department of the National University of Fine Arts and Music. The name Hisaishi Joe was derived from a conversation with a friend during his university days, where they adapted the name of Quincy Jones, who was active at the time, into Kanji. His real name is Fujisawa Mamoru.

He has mainly worked on film music, especially in the works directed by Hayao Miyazaki, he has been responsible for the music of all the feature-length animated films from "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" to "How Do You Live?" over a period of 39 years. He has also composed for seven films directed by Takeshi Kitano, from "A Scene at the Sea" to "Dolls". His eldest daughter, Mai, is a singer. In "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind," Mai, who was four years old at the time, sang one of the songs in the film.

In past interviews, he has expressed a desire to create music that transcends time and borders, and that being asked to write music as Joe Hisaishi is the greatest joy as a composer, showing his profound love for music.
