The story has three protagonists: Kaizuka Inaho from Earth, Slaine Troyard from Mars, and Asseylum Vers Allusia, who serves as both a central character and the heroine. The narrative, presented through the viewpoints of these three characters, is an ensemble drama and a classic SF robot anime revolving around a territorial dispute between Earth and Mars.
During a mission from Earth to Mars, a research team led by Dr. Rayregalia discovers "Aldnoah," a legacy of an ancient civilization. Utilizing Aldnoah, a super-scientific energy source, they establish a highly advanced society. This leads to the development of space warships and the practical application of a new type of mobile weapon, the Kataphrakt. In 1985, the VERS Empire is founded with Dr. Rayregalia as its Emperor. While the VERS Empire gains significant military and political power, the existence of Aldnoah causes Earth to exert economic pressure on Mars, exacerbating the hardships caused by the harsh Martian environment. Repeated pleas by Mars are ignored, fueling resentment towards Earth. This culminates in war in 1999, marking the first interstellar war in human history, which leads to a ceasefire in 2000, a year after the conflict began.
Fourteen years after the ceasefire, in 2014, the story begins with the heroine Asseylum visiting Earth as a goodwill ambassador.
